You're a Star! Father's Day Card

Taking care of my mom after her knee surgery has meant that I haven't had a lot of time for leisure activities.  But she continues to improve each day which means she can do more things for herself, freeing me to get down and dirty at my art table.  And just in time, too, because I still had to make a father's day card for my dad.

When I don't have a specific idea for a card, I flip through my Artistic Outpost stamps and hope that one jumps out at me.  This handsome gent from the Gatsby set gave me a sly wink as I passed by, sealing his fate for the evening.  I started by stamping him twice on a patterned pattern by BoBunny.  The first image was diecut with a Spellbinders oval; from the second image I fussy-cut my gent and adhered him on top of the first for dimension.  (And I just noticed that I lopped off his left ear, poor fellow!)

For the background, I doctored up two other patterned papers from the same BoBunny collection.  That included dry-brushing white acrylic paint, applying molding paste through a stencil, rubber stamping, and sponging on various distress inks.  I can't describe how much joy this process gives me; I could play for hours this way.  After adding the sentiment and some tinted charcoal pencil for shading, I sprayed the entire collage with acrylic sealant.  My Father's Day greeting was added to the inside of the card after the front was dry and assembled.

Happy Father's Day

I created this card to give to my dad on Father's Day.  I feel so fortunate to still have him with us, as many of my friends have lost their parents already.

As Annie calls it, I "busted my stash" for this card, utilizing patterned papers by Prima Marketing for the background.  The focal images are by Tim Holtz.  To age the metal key a bit, I gave it the white acrylic paint treatment.

Here's a picture of my dad from the mid-1950s.  All dressed up and some place to go, no doubt!

And here he is about 60 years later.  I think he's aged quite well, don't you?

Father's Day Urchin

I knew I wanted to use this cute little paperboy from Artistic Outpost on my dad's father's day card, but my dad grew up in a rural area, not the city.  So the Kudzu Kafe building and ticking stripe images were more appropriate. (Random fact:  I love ticking stripe fabric!  Especially in red.)

I stamped the cafe in black, then masked it to stamp the ticking stripe with stormy sky distress ink.  I colored the cafe with pencils and gave everything a rubbing of pumice stone to age it.  My little tyke was also colored with pencils and adhered to chipboard before being added to the card with pop-dots.  I finished the card with some burlap and old blue buttons tied with waxed linen thread.

Cheers to You, Dad!

The handsome young soldier on the right is my dad in the 1950s.  His army buddy won a big jackpot playing bingo at the enlisted men's club, so they ordered a bottle of champagne.

My dad had kind of a wild youth, but he settled down to become a wonderful husband and father.  He's a hard worker, a good provider, and devoted to his family.  My brothers and I are very fortunate!

I didn't have much time for crafting this past week, because my mom and I had a garage sale (aka yard sale or rummage sale).  Today was the final day and I am exhausted.  But we got rid of quite a few items, made a little cash, and donated the leftovers to Goodwill.  We are all looking forward to a relaxing Sunday.

Father's Day Plymouth Fury

When my dad got out of the service and started working, he bought himself a 1958 Plymouth Fury.  The car was fast and flashy, and I can't tell you how many times I've heard the stories about the fights and the drag races he was in because of it.  This was the car he had when my parents were dating and going to dances, and it holds a lot of fond memories for them both.  Unfortunately, they had to sell the car once us kids started coming along, as it was a two-door coupe and had a lot of miles on it. 

My father's day card this year was inspired by his infamous Fury, which was beige and gold and had the quintessential 1950s fins.  I specifically bought this Route 66 stamp set by Artistic Outpost to use on a card for my dad.  I bet he can even identify the car in the main image.

Happy Father's Day

When it comes to dads, I lucked out and got a great one! He's a hard worker, always provided well for his family, and likes to have fun. In spite of working a lot of overtime when we were kids, he still managed to play with us and to attend our school and sporting events. Yep, my dad is a keeper!

I stamped the Artistic Outpost image on white cardstock and colored it using Prismacolor Premier pencils and some distress inks. The kraft background was embossed with a Cuttlebug folder called distressed stripes.
